What is it for?

Preventative breast cancer surgery

Mastectomy (preventive) and breast reconstruction consultation at The London Clinic

Now that genetic tests are available to find out if a woman carries one of the breast cancer susceptibility genes, the number of cases of preventive mastectomy has been rising steadily.

There is now a much greater awareness of genetic abnormalities and breast cancer risk.

The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have been fully characterised and genetic testing for women with a family history that strongly suggests a predisposition to developing breast or ovarian cancer at a young age can now be performed very easily.

Having a bilateral mastectomy followed by breast reconstruction on both sides is a major undertaking, particularly if there are currently no signs of breast disease.

Other women may opt to have a double mastectomy when they are diagnosed with breast cancer in one breast.

Knowing that they are carrying a breast cancer susceptibility gene heightens their worry that the cancer will come back, or that they will go on to develop breast cancer in their other breast.

What does breast reconstruction after a double mastectomy involve?

The most widely used tissue flap technique used for breast reconstruction is to take a tissue flap from the back, taking in the latissimus dorsi muscle, skin, fat and the attached blood vessels.

A woman having a double breast reconstruction can opt for a tissue flap construction only, or a tissue flap construction that also incorporates silicone implants.
