To help treat liver damage

Overview

A FibroScan® liver health assessment is a simple, painless and non-invasive test that’s also sometimes known as transient elastography.

This type of test is performed on a FibroScan machine, which is similar to an ultrasound machine.

The FibroScan machine uses ultrasound waves to measure fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fatty change) in your liver.

The results of a FibroScan assessment can help to identify early signs of liver damage that may otherwise go unnoticed.

At The London Clinic, your scan will be performed by an experienced specialist clinician.

They’ll immediately provide you with the results of your test and let you know if there are any signs of liver damage.

Ideally, a FibroScan is carried out in combination with a blood test called a liver function panel.

When all the results are available, we then arrange for you to meet a hepatologist to discuss what they reveal and any lifestyle changes you may need to make.

However, we can offer you a FibroScan package with consultation and no blood tests. You can discuss your requirements when you book your appointment.

FAQs

Many of our patients are referred to The London Clinic for a FibroScan by their doctor. But we also accept self-referrals if you want to have this test.

If you’re self-referring, you’ll need to pay for the scan at your appointment.

If you’re referred by your doctor, the cost of the test may be covered by your medical insurance.

Please check with your insurance provider and get an authorisation code before you come to the hospital.

While you’re lying on your back a probe is placed on your belly over the area where your liver is. The probe creates a vibration wave (also known as an elastic wave) that passes through your liver. You may feel a gentle flick on your belly every time this happens.

The waves move at different speeds through normal liver tissue and areas of fibrosis.

The information gathered by a FibroScan is displayed as numbers rather than an image.

These values are studied by your consultant to determine how stiff your liver is, and whether there are any regions of fibrosis scarring in it.

The benefits of a FibroScan liver health assessment are:

  • It’s a painless procedure that requires no anaesthetic
  • It can usually be completed in less than 10 minutes
  • You can go home straight away after it’s completed
  • It instantly gives an accurate diagnosis of your liver health
  • It reduces the need for a liver biopsy, which involves a needle being inserted in your liver to collect a tissue sample
  • It can easily monitor changes in liver disease
  • It’s a cost-effective procedure compared to other liver tests

Liver fibrosis is caused by injury or inflammation in your liver.

The liver’s cells encourage wound healing. During this wound healing, excess proteins such as collagen and glycoproteins build up in the liver.

Eventually, after many instances of repair, the liver cells (known as hepatocytes) can no longer repair themselves.

The excess proteins form fibrosis, which is a thickening or scarring of the tissue. Over time, this fibrosis affects how well your liver can function.

All types of liver disease can cause fibrosis. These include:

  • Fatty liver disease
  • Liver damage due to alcohol abuse, such as cirrhosis
  • Chronic viral hepatitis, such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C
  • Metabolic syndrome
