FAQs

Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections are often used when corticosteroid injections don’t work.

Hyaluronic acid is chemically similar to your natural joint fluid and helps cartilage covering the ends of bones to glide against one another.

HA injections are often used to treat osteoarthritis in the knee. They’re also a good option for people with diabetes, as they don’t raise blood sugar levels like corticosteroid injections can.

Your doctor may also refer to a hyaluronic acid injection as a hyaluronan injection or viscosupplementation.

Corticosteroid injection are used to treat swollen or painful joints, which may be caused by an injury or arthritis.

The corticosteroid is injected directly into the joint. You may have a local anaesthetic by spray or injection to numb the skin first.

The joints often treated with corticosteroid injections are the shoulder, elbow,  wrist, fingers, hip, knee, ankle and toes.

Corticosteroid injections are also used to painful tendons and a condition called bursitis (when a fluid-filled sac that acts like a cushion between bones and tendons becomes inflamed).

A corticosteroid injection may also be used to relieve muscle pain in a specific area of the body.

Blood is taken from you and processed in a special machine to remove red blood cells and most white blood cells to create a liquid (plasma) that’s rich in platelets.

The platelets are good at encouraging and speeding up the healing process in your body. Your doctor will then inject the platelet-rich plasma into the area of your injury or chronic condition.

PRP injections are used to heal injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. for example, tennis elbow.

Sclerosant injections involve a solution containing dextrose (a type of sugar) being injected into a ligament, joint, muscle or tendon.

The solution encourages the body’s natural healing process.

Sclerosant injections used to treat a range of conditions, including ligament injuries, spinal or joint instability, tendinotis and osteoarthritis.

Your doctor may also refer to ligament sclerosant injections as prolotherapy, regenerative injection therapy or proliferation therapy.
