Hip replacement and resurfacing surgery is a treatment to resolve ongoing pain and discomfort in the hip joint, usually caused by damage to the end of the femur bone and hip socket.
Underlying conditions like arthritis or injury can cause damage, reduce movement and cause pain.
At The London Clinic, we offer several types of hip replacement surgery, depending on your age, fitness and lifestyle including:
- Traditional total hip replacement surgery
- Minimally invasive total hip replacement surgery
- Hip resurfacing surgery
Your surgeon will discuss which surgical technique is most suitable for you.
Total hip replacement surgery
With total hip replacement surgery, your surgeon replaces the ball and socket joint in your hip, with a new, artificial implant.
The surgery takes around 2 hours, under a general or local anaesthetic.
To begin, your surgeon will make a 10 to 30 cm incision (cut) in your thigh. They will then remove the end of your femur (thigh bone) and replace it with an artificial end (ball implant).
The ball implant is press-fitted into your thigh bone using a titanium stem, or glued on.
Your surgeon then press-fits a titanium socket into your hip cavity and covers it with a substance like polyethylene, for better movement and durability.
Your surgeon will remove the instruments and stitch your incisions closed. Then they will apply a dressing and bandage to your thigh.
When your care nurse is happy with your progress, we will take you back to your private suite to relax.
Hip resurfacing surgery
Instead of removing the head of the femur your surgeon resurfaces (caps) the existing femur bone and hip socket (acetabulum) with a smooth metal. We leave your own bone intact.
Hip resurfacing surgery is normally suited to younger and more active patients.
