FAQs

Hip replacement and resurfacing surgery are routine operations with very good success rates. Yet, all surgery carries some risk and side effects may include:

  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Infection

In a small number of cases, side effects can develop after receiving a new or resurfaced hip joint, including:

  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism)
  • Nerve or blood vessel damage
  • Bone breakage
  • Loosening of the joint (a feeling that the joint has become unstable)
  • Hip dislocation (the hip comes out of its socket)
  • Altered leg length (the leg may become shorter or longer after surgery)
  • Recurrence of symptoms

As part of your treatment package, we offer an enhanced pre-assessment before surgery and rehabilitation afterwards, so we can minimise any risks.

Hip replacement and resurfacing surgery is a treatment to resolve ongoing pain and discomfort in the hip joint, usually caused by damage to the end of the femur bone and hip socket.

Underlying conditions like arthritis or injury can cause damage, reduce movement and cause pain.

At The London Clinic, we offer several types of hip replacement surgery, depending on your age, fitness and lifestyle including:

  • Traditional total hip replacement surgery
  • Minimally invasive total hip replacement surgery
  • Hip resurfacing surgery

Your surgeon will discuss which surgical technique is most suitable for you.

Total hip replacement surgery

With total hip replacement surgery, your surgeon replaces the ball and socket joint in your hip, with a new, artificial implant.

The surgery takes around 2 hours, under a general or local anaesthetic.

To begin, your surgeon will make a 10 to 30 cm incision (cut) in your thigh. They will then remove the end of your femur (thigh bone) and replace it with an artificial end (ball implant).

The ball implant is press-fitted into your thigh bone using a titanium stem, or glued on.

Your surgeon then press-fits a titanium socket into your hip cavity and covers it with a substance like polyethylene, for better movement and durability.

Your surgeon will remove the instruments and stitch your incisions closed. Then they will apply a dressing and bandage to your thigh.

When your care nurse is happy with your progress, we will take you back to your private suite to relax.

Hip resurfacing surgery

Instead of removing the head of the femur your surgeon resurfaces (caps) the existing femur bone and hip socket (acetabulum) with a smooth metal. We leave your own bone intact.

Hip resurfacing surgery is normally suited to younger and more active patients.

After surgery, you should find that your hip pain, stiffness and difficulty walking disappears. Your quality of life should improve, as your ability to do normal activities returns.

If you have other conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes, we can assist you with a thorough treatment plan, to ensure you make the best recovery possible.

How long it takes to recover from total hip replacement and resurfacing surgery depends on how fit and healthy you are before surgery. After surgery, you’ll normally stay 1 to 2 nights at The London Clinic before you can go home.As soon as you are able, your care nurse or physical therapist will have you up and walking, normally a few hours after surgery, or the following day.Studies show that the earlier you move post-surgery, the less likely you are to have complications.Symptoms such as pain, bruising and numbness should settle down after a few days, then rapidly improve within a few weeks. You may experience swelling in the hip and leg for several months.Any scars should fade within a few months, but may remain tender for several weeks.Your care team will be on hand to help and if there’s anything you’re worried about, you can contact them at any time.

In traditional total hip replacement surgery, your surgeon makes a larger incision of 30 cm in the thigh in order to replace the existing hip joint. Surgeons often use traditional total hip replacement surgery to treat patients who have other conditions, like obesity or osteoporosis, or have had previous hip surgery. Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery (hip arthroplasty) is normally for patients who are younger and in better overall health.

Your surgeon makes one or two, smaller incisions (8 to 10 cm) in the thigh and uses smaller, specially designed instruments to replace the joint.

The advantage of minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, is that it leaves less scarring and causes less trauma to the tissue, and recovery tends to be quicker.

Your surgeon will talk to you about which technique is best for you.
