Overview

Endobronchial ultrasound allows your specialist to collect tissue samples and check the condition of your lungs for any abnormalities.

Your specialist may suggest you have an endobronchial ultrasound so they can:

  • Diagnose conditions such as cancer, sarcoidosis or tuberculosis
  • Investigate any abnormalities that have shown up on your scans, such as a CT
  • Assess the size and stage of any tumours more accurately
  • Check if any tumours have spread or progressed to your lymph nodes

An endobronchial ultrasound is a same day procedure that takes place in one of our private, state-of-the-art endoscopy suites near Harley Street.

By choosing The London Clinic, you’ll get a more compassionate and connected kind of care, from enhanced pre-admission through to aftercare and follow up.

FAQs

At The London Clinic an endobronchial ultrasound is a same-day procedure that normally takes around 45 minutes. Your specialist will offer you medication to help you sleep and relax before the procedure. They will also use a local anaesthetic spray to numb your vocal chords and windpipe to make you feel more comfortable.Your specialist begins the procedure by gently placing a thin, camera-tipped flexible tube, called a bronchoscope into your lungs or upper digestive system via your mouth and windpipe. During the procedure, the bronchoscope relays high-quality images of your tissues to a nearby computer screen. The bronchoscope can be used with an attachment to help your specialist take a tissue sample (biopsy).Your specialist will check the airways of the lungs, nearby lymph nodes and take small tissue samples (biopsies) if necessary. After the procedure, your care team will take you to the recovery suite so they can safely monitor you while you wake up.

After your investigation you will recover in the comfort of The London Clinic Endoscopy Unit, until the sedative has worn off. This includes nothing by mouth (eating or drinking) for 1-hour post procedure. For twenty four hours after, you must not drive or operate machinery.Because an endobronchial ultrasound is minimally invasive you should be back to normal after 24 hours. Most people find they can go back to work and carry on with normal activities soon after the procedure. Please discuss any concerns you may have with your consultant.

An endobronchial ultrasound is an advanced way to check the condition of your lungs, lymph nodes and surrounding structures.

It allows your specialist to look in detail at your organs and take samples (biopsies) of any tissue that looks cancerous or abnormal, so they can treat it early on.

Endobronchial ultrasound can also diagnose hard to reach tumours including ones located next to the bronchus (airway between the lung and windpipe).

Having an endobronchial ultrasound speeds up diagnosis so your specialist can start your treatment sooner.

Your throat may feel a little bit sore for a day or two after the procedure and you may feel a little bit sleepy for a few hours immediately after.

You’ll need to wait a few hours before you eat or drink because your throat will be numb from the anaesthetic spray.

Your care team will advise you on how you can look after yourself following your endobronchial ultrasound.

At The London Clinic, the specialists who carry out the endobronchial ultrasound are experts in their field.

During your same day procedure your dedicated care team will look after you and make sure you have everything you need.

The 45 minutes procedure will take place in one of our private state-of-the-art endoscopy theatres near Harley Street.

To make you feel more comfortable while you’re with us, we offer extra touches like a personalised food menu and concierge service.

Once you’re ready to leave The London Clinic, we’ll give you advice to follow to make sure you recover safely at home.

If you need transportation home after the procedure we can arrange a taxi for you.
