What is it for?

Nose surgery to correct a deviated nasal septum

Deviated septum surgery consultation at The London Clinic

Septoplasty is an operation that aims to correct the appearance of a deviated septum. The septum is the structure that divides the nostrils in the middle of the nose.

If the nasal septum is crooked, it can make the nose feel blocked continuously. This can lead to problems with exercising, sleeping, eating, and speaking.

You may have been born with a deviated nasal septum, or it can develop following childhood injuries.

A deviated septum can reduce airflow in the nose and cause some problems with breathing.

Our specialist deviated septum treatment can correct and straighten the nose.

This will allow you to breathe, talk, and sleep comfortably.

We offer septoplasty with our world-leading cosmetic surgeons and ENT (ear, nose and throat) consultants.

FAQs

Deviated septum surgery works by straightening the septum to the middle of your nose.

Your surgeon can perform septoplasty under general or local anaesthetic.

This depends on the shape and position of your nose, your general health, and your preferences.

The operation itself takes between 45 and 60 minutes. It’s usually a day case procedure, meaning you won’t need to stay in hospital overnight.

Your surgeon will make an incision (cut) inside the nose, this means that any scars will usually be invisible.

However, sometimes it’s necessary to make a small cut between the nostrils. Your surgeon will trim and reposition the bone and cartilage to straighten the nasal septum.

Your surgeon can straighten any crooked nasal bones and insert cartilage grafts to correct the deviation. The surgeon will use absorbable stitches to close the cuts.

Finally, they will insert soft splints and dressings to prevent bleeding and support the septum as it heals.

They may also put a splint on the outside of the nose to protect the area and reduce any swelling.

You’ll be able to go home on the same day as your surgery. However, you will need someone to escort you home as you will be unable to drive.

The London Clinic team will advise you about your recovery and arrange a follow-up to assess your progress.

After surgery, the swelling, splints, and nasal dressings can make it difficult to breathe through your nose.

Keeping your head raised using an extra pillow at night, and avoiding blowing your nose, will assist healing. This will also prevent the build up of extra fluid.

It’s important to take time to rest and recover. Avoid work, exercise, hot baths, and bending down for at least two weeks.

Wearing tops that zip or button up can prevent trauma to the area when you pull clothes over your head.

It’s also sensible to avoid crowds and busy places because getting a cold can increase the risk of infection.

After this time, you can gradually start to resume normal activities. It will take up to six months for the swelling to fully resolve.

During recovery, your surgeon and the team at The London Clinic are always available to offer support, guidance, and a helping hand.

Septoplasty surgery can significantly improve the overall appearance of your nose which can lead to a new lease of life.

The operation itself is relatively straightforward and should make it much easier to breathe, eat, and sleep. Your surgeon will discuss what results you can expect to receive from septoplasty.

Deviated septum treatment is a low-risk procedure compared to other forms of nose surgery. However, there are side effects and risks associated with any kind of surgical procedure.

Your surgeon and care team will discuss these with you and make sure you’re well informed about your surgery before you have it.

You should feel confident and reassured that you know exactly what to expect before making any decisions.

The most common temporary side effects of deviated septum surgery are:

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Soreness and tenderness

Other rare complications of deviated septum surgery can include:

  • Continued or prolonged symptoms after surgery
  • A change in the overall shape of your nose
  • A hole in the septum
  • A decreased sense of smell
  • Blood clots or excessive bleeding
