Mr Sebastian Dawson-Bowling Consultant Profile
Sebastian Dawson-Bowling specialises in all aspects of lower limb surgery, especially primary and revision hip and knee replacement, and sports injuries. He also works within the NHS Royal London Hospital major trauma service.
Within his ongoing NHS role as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust, he held the position of Head of Orthopaedic Services from 2017-2022, during which time he led the development of a specialist centre of orthopaedic excellence, also researching the development of accelerated post-surgical patient recovery.
His approach is centred around a firm belief that effective, empathetic communication with patients before surgery is key to both early recovery and long-term success.
Following undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, he undertook specialist surgical training at NHS Guy’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals, the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore) and Hospital for Special Surgery (New York). He has contributed book chapters on orthopaedics, trauma and medical law to volumes published by Oxford University Press, and has himself published 3 textbooks. He also holds Master’s degrees in Medical Law and Orthopaedic Science. He frequently acts as an expert witness in litigation cases.
He sits on the editorial boards for the journal Bone and Joint 360, and the National Joint Registry, which monitors all UK hip and knee implants, surgeons and hospitals.
A keen innovator, he collaborated with fellow experts across Europe on designing the new DREAM hip implant now manufactured in Milan, Italy.
