Dr Nick Plowman Consultant Profile
Dr Plowman is the senior physician and oncologist at St Bartholomew’s Hospital London. During his career he has introduced aromatase inhibitors into breast cancer treatment (the most important innovation in breast cancer in the last forty years) and introduced adrenosuppresive glucocorticoid therapy into advanced prostate cancer (now best standard practice worldwide).
He was the principal investigator (oncology) on the trial that showed that many patients with anorectal cancer can be cured without surgery that involves colostomy (by chemo-radiotherapy). His laboratory research into DNA repair has led to the discovery of two new syndromes. The relevance of DNA repair faults in cancer genesis and progression is now a much researched avenue of oncology and Dr Plowman advises two genetics companies at present with particular regard to new personalised therapies.
Dr Plowman has wide experience in radiation seed brachytherapy for early prostate cancer and has introduced this, for selected patients wishing to avoid surgery, to The London Clinic in 2020.
